BACTON FAIR
For some years we’ve been pleased to provide manpower for the Bacton Fair and last Saturday, 7th August, was no exception. We assisted with car parking as well as providing the coconut shy and our own licensed bar, The Lion’s Den. Also, we were able to assist with the manning of other sideshows on the day. The event was due to be capped with a display by the parachute display team of The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment. To this end we sold hundreds of coasters, each marked with the name of it’s purchaser, then spread them over the dropping zone for the lead parachutist to collect the winner at random. The Fair was a happy rural occasion with the traditional flower and vegetable show attracting much attention. Many sideshows and a fun fair provided welcome distractions for all. There were excellent eating and drinking opportunities whilst the arena gave us the opportunity to watch a cavalcade of historic vehicles, and a sheep shearing display. Musical entertainment of a high standard was provided throughout the afternoon by the Stowmarket Concert Band. The only, and big, disappointment of the day was when the previously fine weather took a sharp turn for the worse for a short while towards the end of the afternoon. The rain fell for a time with an accompanying rise in wind speed and lowering of the cloudbase. This meant that the parachutists, whose support team had already been delayed by the M25, reluctantly had to cancel at the last minute. We therefore recruited the services of Bacton’s own D-Day veteran to draw the winning coaster. The financial results for ourselves and the Fair organisers are still to be finalised but we expect to have raised well over £500.00 for our charity funds.

NEW LION PRESIDENT Stowmarket and District Lions Club held their annual handover dinner on Thursday 17 June. Outgoing President David Thomas, a teacher from Elizabeth Way, Stowmarket handed over the chain of office to Andy Friend. Andy is an Engineering Manager from Bacton and looks forward to following on from the good work achieved in Dave’s year. Andy will be enthusiastically supported in his task by his wife, Angela. David reflected on a busy, happy and successful year for the club with fund raising having brought in some £34,000. There had been many notable events during the year but David felt that the widespread success was only possible because of the fine spirit and fellowship between the 44 club members. He also commented on the sad passing of Lion John Howard during the year and how so many of the club attended his funeral. Andy officially appointed his officers for the year and presented each of them with a framed cartoon. Lion Tony Wass was appointed Vice-President and will take over the helm for the Lionistic Year 2011-12. Around half of the club’s 44 members qualified for 100% attendance awards having attended all meetings or other Lion’s work throughout the year. The annual Lion of the Year award, chosen by the outgoing President, was shared this year between two club stalwarts, Secretary Chris Philpot and Treasurer John King-Fisher. The Boob of the Year award was proudly received by Ernie Pearce. This was in recognition of his defective trailer loading skills during our annual charity shop. A furniture delivery arrived at it’s destination short of a chair. This was later found further back along the route, it’s fall having been softened by a passing Ford Fiesta. Fortunately, the driver was good hearted and promised us some shop items for the next day!
